Do Nordic Pine Decks Need Maintenance and Sealant?

Are you considering putting up a Nordic Pine deck at your home or business? Nordic Pine is a high-quality softwood that originates from Northern Europe.

This wood is known for its slow growth in cold climates, which makes for a denser and more durable wood in comparison to faster-growing pine. Our Nordic Pine is all pressure-treated with a rich brown impregnated stain, allowing it to withstand rot, decay, and insect infestation while also giving it a rich brown tint.

This process forces chemical preservatives into the wood’s cells, further enhancing its longevity, making it ideal for outdoor structures.

Although impregnated wood won’t rot if it isn’t regularly maintained or cared for, it does benefit significantly from regular surface treatments. Routine maintenance allows for the wood to age beautifully while significantly enhancing its lifespan.

Benefits of Regular Maintenance

Maintenance is vital if you wish to extend the natural durability and preserve the aesthetic of your Nordic Pine deck. While this wood is already highly resistant to decay and insects, regular care prevents the wood from warping, cracking, or turning grey. It is not uncommon for well-maintained outdoor Nordic Pine structures to have a service life that exceeds 20 years.

Although this wood might be higher in initial costs when compared to untreated pine, consistent and low-effort treatment ensures a high return on investment in the long-term. Regular maintenance will save you the costs of expensive future repairs and replacements.

Maintenance Schedule

Typically, pressure-treated Nordic Pine structures are still wet upon installation. Once the wood boards have dried out (approximately 3 to 4 months after installation), it is best to surface treat your deck with a wood oil or sealant. This will allow your deck to preserve its original colour while protecting it from moisture.

After the initial treatment, oil or sealant will only need to be re-applied every 1 to 3 years.

Maintenance & Sealant Guidelines

When treating your deck with a sealant, it is generally recommended to use an oil-based, penetrating sealer or wood preservative. This will protect your deck from moisture and UV rays. However, before you start sealing your deck, it is important to first clean it using a dedicated deck cleaner (like our Deck Degrayer) to prepare the wood.

Additionally, if you wish to prevent the grey weathering process, using a light tint will add UV stabilisation.

Additionally, regularly sweeping and washing your deck with a soft brush and a mild cleaning agent, depending on environmental elements, will prevent your deck from becoming slippery and hazardous.
